6/16 McGanns Show Review - HOH, New Hong Kong, Textbook Co-Pilot

Last night all five act brought it at McGanns!

The show started out a bit more mellow with an acoustic set by Detroit native Oliver Thompson, currently in our area while on tour.

After that we had Hero on Hold on stage, hailing from Charlton, MA (not to be confused with Charlestown, or any other town for that matter). The guys played Mom's favorite song, Shattered, and then the crowd forced them to do it again after Mom came late.

After HOH's encore, Don, Rick, Tyler, and Adam rocked their faces off and got everyone in the bar up on their feet. Mother of Dylan came up from Providence to play this show.

Not to be confused with old Hong Kong... New Hong Kong, who specialize in melting faces, did just that last night. Hailing from right here in Bosstown, their name comes from their favorite Chinese restaurant in Brighton. The next stop for the band? Demo.

And to end things right, Textbook Co-Pilot wrapped up the show will a solid set and kept the energy of the night going.

All in all, it was a great night last night at McGanns. Everyone left with F's on their hands, beer in their bellies, good music in their ears, and smiles on their faces.

Innercombustion: A Band to Groove you, Move you and Soothe you.

Groove. I am feeling thoroughly grooved. The band Innercombustion can lay down a groove. I know what your saying, every Red Hot Chili Peppers wannabe and George Clinton cover band can lay down a groove to make a frat party move. For Innercombustion, it’s a combination package; the combo that Inncercombustion presents makes Pepperoni Pizza Combos blush.

Innercombustion brings the funk, but along with the funk comes a more serious tone, with pieces of industrial and prog instrumentation. The blending of styles is seamless on their four-song effort just released for F Nice records.The band truly wears moon shoes because they are jumping in and out of a plethora of styles.

The track that most epitomizes their mix is single To the Hills. It opens with some flowing chords and then kicks into a more established groove with lead singer Patrick McConnell crooning in a lower emotive tone. The beauty of the song stems from constant dynamics in the instrumental arrangement and the vocal harmonies done by McConnell. Though the songs structure comes of as more experimental, Innercombustion still hits us with some standard rock characteristics that no one can argue with like guitar solo in To the Hills that opens with a searing line based on McConnell’s vocal melody.

It’s no surprise that the band has a diverse sound. Their members hail from various locations such as the lovely lands of Southern New Jersey, L.A., and Jerusalem. Further, I did a little detective work with McConnell I was able to get some info out of him on where the band recorded, “Well, lets just say, we were able to get into a few high profile studios when no one was looking.” He says, “What we couldn’t get done there we recorded right in the F Nice studios.”

Though diverse in styles, they have a sound that is unique to Innercombustion. McConnel writes the songs and then brings them to keyboard player Paul Lo Prestie, bassman Dylan Jackson, drummer Moses Eder and guitarist Gadi Caplin to beef them up. McConnell cites influences such as Joy Division and Peter Gabriel but states that he is more influenced by local favorites such as Ros Raskin and the Rice Cakes and Dead Bat Dead Rat. He says, “I am interested in what’s being created around me” concluding, “Bands don’t break, scenes break”.

Innercombustion finds value in a tight knit music scene, and their music is equally tight knit. The arrangements are smooth and each note is played with intent. Upon further speaking with McConnell, I learned more about where the tight knit feel of the music comes from. “Three of the members went to high school together” says McConnell. He continues, “I am a multi-instrumentalist, mainly focusing on vocals and percussion. When I write music, I arrange each instrument as if it were a drum.”

So, we have a band who believes in melding styles, a tight knit music scene, and are releasing a four song EP this month. Intercombustion offering an explosive release to the Boston music scene this month is the best thing that has happened to March since Mardi Gras, and I can guarantee that these guys won’t have to throw beads at you to convince you for a little flash action.

NCN Round 2: The Competition is Heating Up

Like March, NCN roared in like a lion during round 1. As you know, in the first weekend, Those Wolves Actually Happened, Seven Shades of Grey, Zilch, and L-Ski moved forward into round two. Last weekend, Sylvanna Joyce and the Moment, Centerlink, and the Ricecakes made the ranks as well. So while the weather may be coming more lamb-like, the competition is only going to get more ferocious.

Check out these photos from the last night of Round 1, at McGann's pub, all taken by Santana Photo. The line-up was packed, with 9 bands on the bill (although only 7 acts performed).

The bands are competing for a tantalizing prize: a fully recorded EP with F Nice Records, the NCN trophy created by functional art creators, Green Side Up in Allston, a . All 8 semi-finalists will be awarded a prize pack through UNRegular Radio and F Nice Records that will grant them 45 minutes of live audio and video recording at a broadcast party at UNRegular Radio known as the series "Live From the End of Time".

Truezoos: A Mighty Fine Band With Some Mighty Fine Fans

Truezoos is a band based on the principle of chemistry. A three piece outfit hailing from Georgetown Massachusetts, they have been popping up more and more frequently in the Boston music scene. The three boys have recently singed with F Nice Records and are ready to take Boston, and anyone who loves live music, into their world.

The bands sound can be described as being a reggae-rock blend with some jam band undertones. However, it is impossible to put a finger on just what makes the music Truezoos creates irresistible. Looking at the track So Listen the first song off of their Ep of the same name, a listener finds a feast for the ears of easy going grooves under a powerful live life as you please type of message. The following track, Just Enough is impossible to pin down genre wise and impossible stop playing on repeat. The band jumps from a reggae feel to a hooky call and response vocal line. They bring it to the chorus for a more drawn out melody only to fly into the segment that pays homage to serious hip/hop influence.

The Bandconsists of drummer Bob Langlais, Bassist Marc Hoffman and singer/ guitarist Sean O'Sullivan. Sean and Marc have been playing together since the age of thirteen, and Sean describes Marc as "His bassist for life” he continues, “I just don't want to play next to anyone else, we started playing guitar together and then Marc (switching to bass) decided he wanted to fill out the low end.” Bob joined the Truezoo ranks in mid 2010 and the Band sound has been taking steady shape ever since.

For the Truezoo crew, songwriting walks hand in hand with improvisation. Each idea comes from either a verse or chorus that Sean brings in, or a jam session that they start each practice with. “We multi-track the first thirty minutes of each practice” Marc says,he graduated from Umass Lowell with a degree in sound engineering. “From that we can chop up each part and find what has potential for a song.“ Each member knows how to leave the ego at the door in turn has the ability to identify each others strengths. Though Sean might be considered the ‘songwriter’ in the classical sense it is a team process. Sean states, “Marc just plays these amazing bass riffs, so I can take his riffs and bring the song alive.”

Leaving an ego at the door transcends into Truezoos presence when performing. Truezoos stage show consists of the songs they write and record, but they do not stop there. “ When we play a song live, it turns into something else entirely.” Marc says, looking happy just talking about playing. “what is normally two minutes, can turn into twenty minutes, we start playing one song and then turn it into another song, and then throw a cover or two in there”. When playing live the band is all about communication. They never play the same show twice and they never write official set lists.

These live shows, as well as there self recorded song offering So Listen have gained them a local legion of fans. The bands merchandise and promotional materials primarily have images taken from fan art that is given to them by devoted followers. “Its amazing that we influence people, we inspire art with our art” says Sean. Sean wants to inspire and this comes through heavy in his lyrical style and content. Sean, Marc and Bob need music, “Music for me is everything” says Sean, “Memories, everyday experience, a

nd just a way of staying on track.”

F Nice and Truezoos are a match made in rock heaven. A band dedicated to their fans and the pursuit of making the best music possible, and a company devoted to bringing the best of Boston local music to the world can only lead to face-melting results.

Truezoos believe in the power of music, and the difference it can make in a persons life. Sean goes as far as to say, “Music is my life coach” and really based on the music and community these fellas create, Truezoos should be your life coach.

The rhythm section boomed and the narrative of American angst and human experience was crooned by the two singers of Bostons own Pray for Polanski this past Friday night. Pray for Polanski played a crafted and smooth collection of hooky and poignant songs at Church, the Fenways finest rock venue, on Friday the 25th of February. PFP as there known to scenesters and people without time to say there full name, come at you with a two guitar attack, a sultry female front woman, and a rhythm section whose thunder makes Thor hide under the bed.

Now, I know what you are thinking, partly because I am psychic, and partly because its only natural that you would think, where can I purchase an album from these guys? Well, you are in luck, they are currently in the studio laying down what will be there third album. Aviv Rubinstein, guitar player, singer, and band founder, stated “The album is coming along well, it should be done in May.” The band is recording the album at the F Nice Records studio, the label to which they are also signed. So what fuels this band? What knocks the rocks of this musical powerhouse whose likes on Facebook are rising faster than prices at the pump? I Visited PFP in the studio while they were mixing to find out.

The track playing in the Background when I was observing the session sounded tight. The song, a staple of their live set, beamed with the signature Polanski energy even in its half constructed state. Speaking with the band it easy to tell they are excited for the release, “Its just exciting to have an album in the works that actually sounds good, that actually represents us” Singer Anne expressed. “I used to only refer people to our live show to check us out, but now I can give them something else to fall in love with.”. And fall in love with them you will. Pray For Polanski represent a faction of music that needs to grow in Boston. The band presents hipster ethos, but has a sense of intelligence and sincerity that blows right by the normal ironic trappings of many “hipster” groups.

Each member of the group brings a personality to the band and recording process. Drummer Josh Richard just needs a few packs of Camel Blues and trip to traditional German restaurant Jacob Wirth’s to nail a few drum takes and lay down the album. While lead guitar Jordan Johnston just might need a two hour break to sneak out and see the Beiber film Never say Never for a little inspiration to make musical magic come out of his guitar. Main man Aviv Rubenstien only requires a little a chicken from Bostons best chicken wing joint ‘Wing It’ to make his vocals take flight.

No matter what each member needs to record a great album, the more important fact is that Pray for Polanski is recording an Album that all music listeners Need. Not often does a band emerge with such a strong live performance, unique voice, and album in the works to boot. So folks the month of May has two happenings that call for celebration: PFP’s releasing a new album and what would Sugar-Ray Robinson's 89th Birthday. And ladies and gentlemen, lets get ready to rumble because PFP and Sugar Ray are both Knock-out kings.

No Contracts Needed Kick Off Last Night at McGann's Pub

The No Contracts Needed Rompetition kicked off it’s fourth year last night at McGann’s Pub, and boy was it a great night. Kicking things off for round one were Matt Koelsch and the Allies, Pleasant Sweaters, GravitaS, Those Wolves Actually Happened, and Vanzetti.

The NCN Rompetition combines use of online voting by the fans, voting at the venue, and secret judges to decide the winner of each round. The first rounds take place over the course of this weekend and next. Check the line-up, and learn more about buying tickets online here. The semi-finals and finals are being held in March. This morning, the UNregular Morning Show on UNregular Radio announced that Those Wolves Actually Happened won last night’s battle.

REVIEW: Rocksplosion @ McGann's: Comme Des Garçons

Last Thursday night, the crowd at McGann's got a taste of what Boston's most rocking-est ladies have to offer. Taking the stage were 3 bands, with, at the very least, one thing in common, they had a member of the “fairer” sex doing a good portion of the rocking-out for the evening.

First on stage, was Seven Shades of Gray. Lead singer, Christie, has a beautiful voice, that sounds like mix of Sheryl Crow, Lisa Loeb, and Edie Brickell. She's backed by a drummer (DRawk), bassist (Willie), and guitarist (Dan). Their sound can be best described as both fun and pop-punk. You can find Seven Shades of Gray on Myspace, and Facebook.

The Battleships Cometh is a rock band based in Somerville. Lead singer, Leilani, channels a 70's rockstar while on stage. With energy, enthusiasm, and passion, she, and the rest of the Battleships (Jon on guitar, Jaime on drums, and Mike on bass), voraciously grabbed the attention of the show-goers. Their music is definitely influenced by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Primus. You can find the Battleships Cometh on facebook and myspace.

Last to take the stage were the Lousy Instruments. Their lead singer and guitarist, Webb, has an interesting voice. It's got that punk rock warble/scream to it, but he can reel that in and have a less abrasive sound. Backed by the lovely Lee, on bass, and Greg on drums, the Lousy Instruments have a powerful sound with a pop appeal. You can get their album from F Nice here, and you can find them on Myspace.

Pop Rawk In Yo Mouth: Justin Goodrich CD Release @ McGann's Pub

On Saturday night, F Nice put on yet another fantastic show at McGann's Pub in Boston. It was Justin Goodrich's CD release show, and also featured Grace Morrison, JVD and the Back Porch Smokers, and Zilch. This particular reviewer has spent too much time getting high this week, rendering her unable to convey, with words, the awesome-ness of the show. However, if a picture is worth a thousand words, a video must be worth ten times that. The following videos all came from this live stream, on qik.com.

Opening the show was Grace Morrison and the RSO, a six piece folky-bluesy local act featuring an upright bassist and violinist.

Next up was JVD & the Back Porch Smokers. A three piece "boozy, bluesy rock 'n roll" act based in Cambridge.

Justin Goodrich blew in like a hurricane, having come from an earlier show in Manchester, NH. He's a hustler! You can read a review of his last show at McGann's here.

Finishing off the show was Zilch, a Boston based jam band. One of the members' mom was there taking pictures; it was really cute.

The No Contracts Needed Rompetition is in its fourth year and it's better than ever. Featuring over 50 acts performing throughout the course of two weekends (2/17-19, and 2/24-26). For less than the cost of sponsoring an orphaned baby in the 3rd world, you could be spilling beer on some of the best, mostly, local bands. Tickets for each night are $10 at the door, but they're only $5 if you buy them here in advance.

Bear V. Rock 2011 at TT's (Photos Coming Soon)

Last Thursday night, F Nice brought the rock to TT the Bear's Place. If you are smart and cool, you were there. If you weren't there, well, then you're neither smart nor cool. However, you can clear your name by becoming a fan of F Nice on Facebook. And you should know (and be ashamed) that you missed out on an aural ass kicking by Sweet Irony, Dead Fish, Moniker, and Oilhead.

Kicking things off was Sweet Irony, a rock band hailing from Boston, and they wasted no time in setting the tone for the night: rocking the crowds' face off. Their set included a cover of “Roxanne”, need we say more? Check out Sweet Irony on facebook and myspace.

Deadfish was second on the bill, and mellowed every one out a little. Deadfish's sound is influenced by Sublime, however they bring their “east coast attitude” to their tunes. They self describe their music as “melodic and upbeat” and we couldn't describe it any better. Deadfish can be found on facebook, and on Reverb Nation.

Dex and Dave Presenting a Pro Tools 9 won on The Boston Local Muisc Show

Moniker is an alternative indie rock band, that has a sound described as "ethereal sonic story-telling; with U2's rhythms, Radiohead-like melodies, Pink Floyd sensibilities, and a necessary dose of irony." The writer doesn't exactly know what “Pink Floyd sensibilities” means, but she does know that the crowd was digging it as much as she was. “Like” Moniker on facebook, or add them as a friend on myspace.

Finishing us off, was Oilhead. Oilhead was good. Energetic. It was lovely to see a lady rock out like that. Lead singer, Britty Glitter, is a petite and fiery woman and held her own amongst the rest of the talented band (girl power, yay!). Perfect way to end the evening. Doug MacDonald and The Hookups at Church January 6th 2011

Last night we saw an awesome show at Church of Boston (69 Kilmarnock St. Boston 02215). The Doug MacDonald Band and The Hookups both put on long pasionate sets. What was great about these bands is that each has a very unique sound that cannot be heard elsewhere in Boston.

For those of you unfamiliar with The Doug MacDonald Band you most certainly need to check out their music on MySpace or live at one of their many upcoming concerts. Playing a great mix of new and old orgininal hits, Doug and his drummer, Patty Short, weave intricate beats and melodies around fun and moving lyrics. And while the band's style touches on greats of the 80's and 90's there really is nothing like it, especially in Massachusetts.

The five-piece Hookups brought a whole new energy to the stage, as they are quite known for. Their upbeat jams quickly had the crowd swaying and bouncing across Church's dancefloor. The Hookups played many of their fantstic original songs blended by the sweet and smooth vocals of lead Kevin Braxton, which got Church nice and warm.

As always engineer Kevin Corzett made the room sound beautiful and pool was enjoyed by many of the patrons on their gorgous red tables.

Rock the Year Show – McGann's Pub – December 30, 2010

If you were not in attendance at last Thursdays Rock the Year show at McGann's, then you missed out on three fantastic performances. Justin Goodrich, Matthew James, and Icy Moons of Jupiter rocked out to a small and intimate audience.

Justin Goodrich a solo artist, with soulful vocals and a, sort of, Latin American Rock feel on his acoustic guitar, whet the audiences' appetite with a few covers, mixed in with a few originals. He interacted with audience throughout his set taking requests, one of which was politely denied, although he made up for it with a cover of Elvis's “Suspicious Minds”. His CD-release show is January 22nd at McGann's and you'll likely hear him on UNregular Radio[unregularradio.com] that week as well.

The second performer, was Matthew James; A man who clearly likes to tell stories through his songs. His originals were heartfelt and personal. He mixed in several covers, the most unexpected being “Take a Ride With Me” by Nelly (with a little “All along the Watch Tower” mashed in at the end). Although typically a solo act, James had a banjo-playing homeboy join him on stage mid-set, making the performance instantly more folky and bluesy.

Rounding off the night, was a four piece band, the Icy Moons of Jupiter. A rocky, folky, and bluesy act, self-described as a “Jam Band”, Icy Moons of Jupiter complemented the first two acts nicely, while bringing a slightly louder, brighter, and more upbeat sound to the venue.

What are the three activities that everyone wishes could be combined into one super, mega-thing? The correct answer is great local music, sex, and drinking, of course! This is why F Nice Records has created a drinking game DVD out of rockin' live performance clips and a sex toy party segment of The Boston Local Music Show.

Like every good drinking game, this one has several rules that apply throughout the DVD. Some involve drinking when you see a picture of a beer and another may involve bringing out the dirtier side of your favorite F Nice guys.

And to kick it up a notch, frontman Dex Ter will jovially share a drink with you in between segments and offer a word of party advice.

Part of the game features a recording from The Boston Local Music Show on Unregular Radio, where special guest Mimi Veneziano, a representitive for Athena's Home Novelties out of Rhode Island talking with DAve Crespo and Dex Ter about the extensive collection she offers. Be prepared to see equipment of all sizes, shapes and colors and something they call "the ultimate beaver."

And what would an F Nice party be without some kick-ass, live local music to compliment your drinking.
The Battleship Cometh, a local band of four members will get your blood flowing with some groovy beats that will have you dancing beer-in-hand. Additionally there is a surprise appearance from solo artist Zayde Buti that is certain to make your night unforgettable.

Live From The End of Time - Broadcast Recap

On Saturday, October 23rd, F Nice Records hosted a live recording of three bands on Unregular Radio. Stellarscope, a band from Philadelphia, came up to perform with local bands All These Elements and A Cat Whisker Radio.

Stellarscope is a three piece band from Philadelphia who's music has a hard rock sound with a psychedelic influence. Their song, "Just Like Flowers" has upbeat percussion mixed with equally hard guitar riffs and the addition of electronic distortions gives it a space feel. Some of their slower songs use the same ecclectic combination of sounds.

All these Elements is a local Boston band that combines fast-paced rock with elements of pop. Katia Racine's vocals give their music a catchy, danceable quality.

A Cat Whisker Radio is another local Boston band that has a punk-rock sound with a steady-paced and hard hitting feel. Some of their songs such as "My Friend Satan" includes aspects of folk as well.

This Friday, July 30th McGann's will be hosting F Nice Records' Rock This Party show!

The New England native singer/songwriter John Paul will be returning from LA to play this show. The fine city of Boston will welcome John Paul back as he plays songs off of his debut album, Belmont Boulevard.

Paul has been independently rising in the singer-songwriter scene as he has been Featured on KCAL9 (LA CBS affiliate) via Skipstone Productions' show "So Cal NOW!". Paul has also performed at the UCB Theater as a special guest musician and has brought large crowds to New York City, Boston, Portland (ME) and Los Angeles.

Also playing that night are Ice Cream Social and Lauren Bateman. Headlining the show is DAve Crespo's After Party! When the clock hits 12 midnight and the party is in its waning breath, DAve Crespo's After Party is just the cure for the second wind blues. The band formed in 2007 when Crespo decided to put a line up behind his acoustic efforts. DAve Crespo's After Party released their first record in 2009 appropriately titled, "DCAP."

Last night at McGann's, we had 4 awesome bands take the stage including Pressure System, Speakeasy, Mack The Knife, and The Spin.

The Spin headlined the show and rocked our faces off with songs like Sandwiches and Break it out.

Before them, Mack the Knife took the stage and had everyone in the bar on their feet, jumping and dancing.

This five-piece funky group is from Worcester, MA and hit up McGann's for their first time last night and will be welcomed back in Boston anytime, without a doubt. After the show, lead singer Cha-Cha got a little riding lesson from fellow bandmates and a generous fan.

The music continues tonight at the UnRegular Radio station who will be hosting an UnRegular Affair for friends of The Boston Local Music Show. If you have been on or know someone whose played on the show, come out for a good time tonight at the station!

BEAR v. REGGAE July 22nd

Next Thursday (July 22), TT the Bears in Cambridge will be hosting our Bear v. Reggae show featuring Sour D and The Flo, two of our favorite local reggae acts along with The Release and Harbortown. Its a guaranteed night of funk and drunk.

Headlining the show is Sour D. Sour D hails from Reading, MA and has been gigging around the Boston area since early 2008. The band has covers ranging from artists like Rage Against the Machine to Sublime, mixed in creative original jams, Sour D will always give you something to dance to.

The Flo, self-described as experimental progressive rock fusion with a Kung-Fu Grip, will also be playing at TT's. The Flo has been playing music together for the better part of 6 years, The Flo has continued to evolve as a band. Hail Plankton & Horcrux Show Review!

Last night at McGann's, we had two stellar bands rock out with hour long sets each. Playing to an excited crowd, Hail Plankton took the stage first and delivered a tight set featuring songs like Hermit King and Special Treasure.

Andy, Pete, and Matt were phenomenal and did their city of Boston proud destroying the stage with deadly riffs that left us wanting more.

Horcrux took the stage next. Hail Plankton was a tough act to follow but Horcrux rose to the occasion with high energy and an awesome setlist.

And just when we thought the show couldn't get any better, Horcrux surprised us all with an breathtaking metal rendition of "Paparazzi".

We've got more awesome live local music coming your way this weekend at our favorite venue, McGann's. Headlining TONIGHT (July 9) is Milquetoast & Company playing our Hot Summer Sun Rock Out show. Good Times at Good Life

Pretty Poison and Atom Strikes Again proved Good Life deserves it's name this Tuesday night. July continues free Tuesday live music shows at Good Life in downtown Boston (28 Kingston St. 02111) with many more acts to come.

The multi-talented members of Atom Strikes Again opened the night up with a long set of their best material. By the time Atom put their instruments down everyone in the room were feeling warm and ready for fun.

Pretty Poison then lit up the crowd her with smooth flow and tantalizing lyrics. Poison's set got everyone on their feet and bouncing around.

Before the night ended Atom got back on stage with a couple friends and gave up an encore.

Every Tuesday of the week there is a free show at Good Life downtown. Doors are at 8PM, it is 21+ and there is NO COVER. Next week is ORYN, Grace B*Curran, and Travel Info. Then on the 20th The Culprit Policy and the_Stampede play. All presented by Good Life and F Nice Records.

Another Great Skum of the Earth Wednesday Punk Night

Skum of the Earth Wednesday Punk Night at McGann's Boston is certainly going strong with another great one last night. Fan and musicians alike all brought their 'A' game for a night of drinking, dancing, and singing at McGann's.

Jumper started the night right off with some really great stuff that took me right back to when I was their age, or at least how I remember it. They showed huge energy and some really fantastic musical talent.

Four Point Restraint followed up with a nice long set that took the audience across up and down and brought smiles all around. Check out this video of them.

Last on the bill, The Few And The Far tore the place up. Everyone got involved and there were many guest vocals and sharing of mics.

Chestnut Growler arranges these wonderful Wednesdays, so be sure to get at him if you've got a punk band you'd like to see at McGann's. All the photos and video in the post are courtsey of him. Dadfight & The IZA Show Review

Both Dadfight and The IZA took the stage last night at McGann's with The Black Ayahuasca and absolutely rocked our faces off. There were guitars smashing into cymbals, slipping and sliding on stage, and just overall awesomeness.

The Inevitable Zombie Apocalypse brought so much energy to the stage. Dan jumped up on amps, hair flying and accidentally unplugged things left and right with an epic powerslide... all while keeping the music tight as ever.

Dadfight ended the evening with style as Vlad busted out his shiny new Jaguar and that guitar was just as stunning as their sound. Earlier in the day, both bands played live on The Boston Local Music Show on UnregularRadio.com hosted by F Nice's finest, Dex Ter and DAve Crespo.

Deadfish Rocked All Asia, More Shows Coming Up This Week!

This past Saturday was humid and hot, but inside All Asia Deadfish kept things cool as a part of F Nice's all ages show. This shining young group is from Littleton, Mass and their style is reminiscent of Sublime with reggae, rock, and dub influences.
The band is currently working on their first full-length album and rocked All Asia with some brand new songs, one of which they had just finished minutes before playing.

Despite a scarce crowd, Deadfish played a great set and looked awesome doing it with their glittering instruments; Rapper T-buck was featured in a few of their songs, keeping the sound tight and upbeat. You can see Deadfish at one of their upcoming show July 11th at the Comcast Center (myspace.com/deadfishlittleton).

The live music is continuing this week and through the weekend with another Scum of the Earth show tonight and a great lineup tomorrow night.

Leaders Led NCN 10 Rompetition Trophy Acceptance Video

As I'm sure you know, Leaders Led won the NCN 10 Rompetition. The grand prize includes playing on stage at The Regent Theater this Friday 3/19 with Destroy Babylon, The Flo, Travel Info, and Sour D. Leaders Led also wins 2 days of recording at Sanctum Sound studio in downtown Boston, and duplication and distribution from F Nice Records.

However, all great competitions also need a trophy for the winner, and Green Side Up Gallery provided us with a really amazing one. Here is a video of Leaders Led being presented with the trophy during a The Boston Local Music Show music break.

DCAP Birthday Bash Review

Last night's show at McGann's Boston rocked so hard the rain almost stopped. DCAP had two birthday's to celebrate, and the audince really dug it as things got hot on the floor.

Rocket Rocket opened the night on a handful of Cosmos and blew things up. Lost On Liftoff came on next and built the energy up even higher; there is just something so proper about white ties.

Moonstone Lady played a great set including a song they had not played since the band was formed, and kept things at full boil for 'Crespo.

Then DAve Crespo's After Party got on stage and things got CRAZY. For those who have not seen DCAP in a while, their lineup has gotten real serious, and the band puts on blow-you-away shows.

Leaders Led win the NCN 10 Rompetition

The Rompetition finals last Saturday was one of the toughest competitions this year will see. Seven fantastic bands took the stage and wailed out their best for twenty minutes. After seven preliminary matches, the NCN 10 Rompetition finals pitted the best of 52 New England local bands against each other. When the dust cleared Leaders Led were victorious with The Turkeys and Lady Lamb The Beekeeper close behind them.

NCN 10 wraps up this month with the Grand Finale show at The Regent Theater. F Nice has discounted tickets to this show featuring Destroy Babylon, Sour D, The Flo, Travel Info, and the Romp winners Leaders Led.

The Taildragger. The Ladie's Man. T Model Ford, the outlaw blues man, flew from Greenville, Mississippi, for a rare performance at P.A.'s Lounge in Somerville. Thanks to the combined efforts of F Nice Records and the Boston Blues Society, this once in a lifetime show became a reality. Two things I can tell you about this experience, at almost ninety T Model Ford can jam, and he's got serious game.

I first laid eyes on this man as I walked into the packed club. With cane in hand, T Model Ford was in the middle of the floor dancing with a forty something married woman. On stage Erin Harpe was starting the night off, serenading us with those sweet blues. Erin Harpe, of the Delta Swingers and Lovewhip, is definitely deserving of the praise she receives from the blues community. I was taken away by her fantastic finger pickin' skills. Showing that Erin is a master of her guitar. This acoustic blues set was a great way to start off the night. When I checked in on T Model Ford, he had taken a break from dancing. He was sitting for a spell to enjoy a drink of Jack Daniel's a fan had bought him. A line of women had formed to take pictures and smother him in kisses.

The Ten Foot Pole Cats took the stage and pretty much kicked the party up a notch. This local Delta blues band absolutely wailed on stage as they performed covers of classic blues hits and a bunch of their originals. Ten Foot Pole Cats are so good you have an uncontrollable urge to jump up and dance your troubles away.

T Model Ford came up to the stage to the hoots and hollers from fans spanning a couple of generations. After a short warm up, T Model Ford did his thing for an hour and a half, only stopping due to it being last call. Mixing up several blues styles, T Model Ford played a collection of songs spanning his thirty year career. He even threw in some classic blues favorites, such as "Hoochie Coochie Man". With a smile and a wink, T Model would catch everyone's eyes to make sure we were having a good time. One gentleman I met said this was the happiest day of his life, topping his wedding. He has been a fan since childhood and has never seen T Model Ford in person. T Model Ford is quite the showman and it was a pleasure to have him come up to the Boston area.

T-Model Ford at PA's Lounge TOMORROW!!!!

This Thursday February 25th T-Model Ford will be performing at PA's Lounge in Somerville. For those of you who do not know Mr. Ford, he one fantastic classic-style blues musician who is just too badass to leave this world behind.

T-Model is on Fat Possum Records, the same label as the Heartless Bastards and Andrew Bird. Here is an excerpt from Fat Possum's page about Mr. Ford:

T-Model's credentials are impeccable; if anything he's over qualified. He was born James Lewis Carter Ford in Forrest, a small community in Scott County, Mississippi. T-Model thinks he's seventy-five but isn't sure. He was plowing a field behind a mule on his family's farm by age eleven, and in his early teens he secured a job at a local sawmill. He excelled and was later recruited by a foreman from a bigger lumber company in the Delta, near Greenville, and eventually got promoted to truck driver. Between that and working in a log camp T-Model was sentenced to ten years on a chain-gang for murder. He lucked out and was released after serving two. He says, grinning, "I could really stomp some ass back then, stomp it good. I was a-sure-enough- dangerous man."

A Bit Much Wins the 2-18 Rompetition

The fourth NCN 10 Rompetition show was FIRE last night at McGann's Pub in downtown Boston. The competition was hot and heavy as seven more bands battled live for a spot in the March 6th finals. When it was all said and done, everybody had a great time and left with faces melted and heads nice and toasty.

The winner for the night was A Bit Much. Whether or not they actually were as they claimed "a bit much" they took the most patriarchal band award and these 0 points added to their score carried them to the win.

The Pink Parts took the fan vote, and Cory Allen Staats the online vote, and both put on great performances. But the judges scores for A Bit Much were too strong to overcome even with their excellent sets.

Metal Night Returns to McGann's Pub

As anyone who reads this blog regularly knows, F Nice loves McGann's Pub. For those of you who have not been there, McGann's is located at 197 Portland Street in downtown Boston. This is right next to both the TD Garden and the MBTA North Station (Green and Orange T lines plus northern commuter rails).

McGann's is a great place to eat and drink during the day as well as a super bar to sit in and watch your favorite game, whether it be the Bruins or Rugby. Then at night McGann's large stage becomes one of the area's best places to see up-and-coming live music acts.

The venue has been host to many spectacular themed concerts. One of current note is the NCN 10 Rompetition, which continues this week with battles at McGann's on Thursday and Friday. An ongoing live concert series that F Nice has been running at McGann's with excellent following is Tuesday All Acoustic Night. We bring in all sorts of great acoustic musicians and always have a nice low cover so everyone can afford to have some drinks while they enjoy the night's music.

Recently it was brought to our attention that before there was All Acoustic Night, Tuesdays at McGann's were reserved for metal. Now being all about the scene, F Nice would never turn down what the fans want; so on Tuesday February 16th METAL NIGHT RETURNED!

Gutshot, Powerstance, and Horcrux tore things up and set spirits rights. Faces were melted, eardrums were blown, and a great time was had by all.

Now don't you worry, All Acoustic nights will continue (with the next one slated for March 9th), but mixed between them will now be plenty of sweet sweet metal.

Saturday Feb 13th's Romp Wrap-up

On third Rompetition night things got really serious with some blazing performance and brutal competition. McGann's was full of hot sexy people and act after act of really great music.

Saturday nights winner was East is East, a band that came down from New Hampshire to compete. NCN 10 really shows that when the grand prize is something great like contract-free recording dupe and distro, and when there is no fee to join, great acts will come from all over the place to play.

Runners up for the 13th show were Jaxon Boom and Zero Point. Thanks so much to everyone who played! It was a really amazing night of music with metal, funk, jams, and many faces melted.

The NCN 10 Rompetition Starts Off Strong!

The second night of the NCN 10 Romp was full of fantastic music and lively spirits. Every performance was great and there was a lot of fun to be had.

Lady Lamb The Beekeeper took first place and earned herself a spot in the finals at The Middle East Upstairs on March 6th. Ship High in Transit won the online vote, but the other contenders put up a serious fight, and Ship High was not sorry to have lost to a friend. In fact no one seemed upset that Lady Lamb won, as she blew pretty much everyone out of the water.

Starlight Grey one the crowd vote and almost first. All through the night though, each act was excellent, and none were to be missed.

Preacher Jack coverts PA's Lounge in Somerville

How many of you have ever heard of Preacher Jack? Now how many of you have seen him live? Well you need to, because Preacher Jack is seriously amazing.

Jack rocked the crowd with some great Hank Williams and Jerry Lee Lewis tunes, a few of which I had never even heard. There was also some gospel in the mix to "Lift our spirits...and send us home with warmth in our hearts." Now that's the kind of sermon I like!

Geezer played next and proved that 8 middle aged dudes can all fit on the sage at PA's. We thank them for that greatly.

After Geezer were the Ten Foot Pole Cats. They put on a fantastic set and really rocked the house. We are very excited because the Pole Cats are coming to PA's Lounge again on Feburary 25th to play with a very special guest, Mr. T Model Ford.

The Fiends rounded out the night

with some really great grooves and sent everyone off with warmth in their hearts as Preacher Jack had hoped.

F Nice at PA's Lounge - Hot n Sexy

Last night, sweet music poured from PA's Lounge right up until closing time. PA's is located at 345 Somerville Ave, thats Union Square in yep you guessed it, Somerville; and it was full of happy dancing bodies last Friday.

The Whipjacks started off the January 22nd show and really set a great vibe for the night. Their music is smooth and uplifting, and really makes you move your hips to it.

Next was Sour D, who showed off some serious talent at genres of music far south and west of New England. The

crowed was thick and loved the beats, and we all know that life is much better with plenty of sax. Sour D even played an encore, which isn't the most kosher thing for the support band to do at a show, but no one complained about their excellent cover of Pressure Drop.

Slow Century brought the night to a fantastic end with some fine keyboard action as well as great male and female vocals. The room stayed full right up until the last song and the crowd chanted for more even after their instruments had been put away.

Everyone went home happy, and there will be plenty more great F Nice show as PA's Lounge. There is even a very special one tonight featuring Ten Foot Pole Cats, Preacher Jack, The Fiends, and Geezer.

Rocksplosion at McGann's last Friday 1-8-2010

Last Friday McGann's pub in downtown Boston was seriously rocksploded. There were 4 fantastic bands, many raffle drawings for shirt and ticket giveaways, and the whole things was broadcasted live on Unregular Radio.

Inside The Avalanche had the place packed from the get-go and started the night off right with an amazing set. They went high and low, with soft crooning and pounding rock, all showing off their talent and range. Their fans were thirsty for drinks McGann's great bartender Vlad, who was a blur for most of the night, and the band was hungry for life (not like zombies though).

Next Dex and DAve pulled a couple raffle winners, one for an F Nice t-shirt and the other for tickets to this Friday's McGann's Show. They then Leaders Led, who laid some

really great tunes on us and were pretty funny guys as well.

Vostok 4 took the stage third and played a raging set of all original music (despite serious pressure from the ladies in the crowd to taint their love). The guys in Vostok 4 move around so much and play so fast that they must burn more calories (and probably green) than Michael Phelps. Note in the picture Vostok 4's keyboardist's rig; it's serious serious shit.

And more prize giveaways of course....F Nice always hooks up their fans.

Finishing up the show was Dirty Strange. Besides their lead singer starring in the best picture I got all night, Dirty Strange also won the award for best signage. We ended the night with a final giveaway including 2 tickets of the winners choice from this month's F Nice Calendar.

The Boston Local Music Show's First Airing

Today was the first airing of The Boston Local Music Show, hosted by none other than Dex Muthafukin Ter. The show is a new fixture on UnregularRadio.com, Thursdays from 1-4pm. It is sponsored by F Nice Records and Unregular Radio, but don't worry because as we all know there is no telling Dex what to do or say.

The Boston Local Music Show focuses on local music acts; fucking duh. Boston has so many great artists, and with the current sorry state of the scene it's hard for any local Boston band to get the exposure they deserve. Dex was accompanied by Dave Crespo, best know as the latin head of the Boston local band DCAP, and they definitely did the scene some justice.

Anyone who listened to the show knows that there were some technical difficulties involving Dex's vocal feed which were unable to be resolved in the 3 hour show. Resident ponderer Mr. Lax speculates that the issues have to do with how fantastically unique Dex's voice is and the simple fact that the internet was not ready for it.

Nonetheless there were over 35 fantastic songs played, all featuring local arists, and only a few of which you could ever get a chance to hear on any "mainstream" station. Over the 3 hours there was such a great range of excellent music played that I think everyone listening heard something that they hadn't before but really liked.

Tomorrow night (Friday January 8th 2010) we will again be working with Unregular Radio to bring you the show at McGann's show streaming live. So if for some reason you can't make it to that show, which will be a supertastic rocksplosion, you can listen to it on unregularradio.com.

Don't Call The Bartender A Bitch

The lesson of last night's show at McGann's is: When the bartender tells you to wait outside until your set, you probably shouldn't call her a bitch or the towering bouncer, who happens to be her boyfriend, will throw your ass out before you even set foot on the stage.

After that we all had a laugh about how much it sucked to be 19, and the headliner Kuuluuko opened up for themselves. Plenty of fun was had and only some of it at that dude's expense.

Anyway, today at 1pm Dex will be live on Unregular Radio doing the first of his new weekly Boston Local Music radio show. He put together some really fantastic local music from many genres and the show is going to be great.

Thursday night was a good night for rock n roll. F Nice Records brought three great bands who definitely wail. Colbourne started the night off. I found these guys interesting because they played as if they wanted to play metal. During a couple of songs, the lead singer would throw in a hard metal type scream. It worked out well though. That aside, Colbourne played a solid set.

American Stranger took the stage next and kicked it off with a cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl". From there it was mish mash of original songs and covers. The original songs remind of the bands from my parents generation. American Stranger should have been opening for the Who or Crosby, Stills & Nash. They jammed out cover songs from the Beatles, Sublime, Kings of Leon, and the Doors. The Doors portion of the show was actually a 15 minute mega medley. It almost made you want to go out and get heroin and write poetry.

Jaxon Boom finished everything and everybody off. For the fifty minutes they played, it was non-stop dancing, sweating, jumping around, and thrashing. This band puts on one heck of a show. A mixture of punk, indie, and church choir styles really blew me away. Having a heavy arsenal from each member of the band, Jaxon Boom hit you from every angle. You never know where the next awesome solo is going to come from. Then when you settle your head, they hit you again. Don't be surprised if you see Jaxon Boom on the Warped Tour or something like that. These guys are going to blow up.

F Nice gets down with Ribs N Blues

On Nov. 20th F Nice got All-American at Copperfield's. We put together two a classic combination that helped make America the shit. Chef Matt Lax cooked up some seriously delicious, fall off the bone ribs for us, along with rice and cornbread. The aroma pretty much pulled people off the streets.

All night we had two floors of incredible blues music performed by bands. On the top floor The Dave Marshall kicked off the night properly with their kick ass jams. That Old Feelin', The Ashley Rhodes Blues Band, and Matt Hopkins & the Hotels followed suit keeping the crowd groovin' throughout the night. In the Down Under Sam Kelly, Bury Me A Lion, And Just Machines shook the ground, literally, with their mighty rockin' ways. Knowledege finished everybody off and sent them home with their bootys jiggling.

F Nice has a great weekend at McGanns Pub

This weekend, the folks at F Nice Records partied it up at McGanns Pub (197 Portland st.) and can't wait for more. Saturday we rolled up in full force with a bunch of F Nice fans and enjoyed the musical stylings of F Nice favorites Pray For Polanski, Kick Drum, and Cars On Mars. All three of these bands played with a fire that got everyone off their seats and on to the dance floor. There was even a good amount of people strolling in off the streets, as if called in by the pied piper. Despite how late it got, the whole crowd demanded more music from the bands, but sadly we had to go home.

Sunday night, though a little calmer, was still extremely fun. Mary's Ghost started off with an excellent set. Then the Turkeys came on stage. Even with a light crowd, the Turkeys screamed and thrashed their hearts out. I was tempted to start a mosh pit by myself, even though I am sure the band would have joined in. F-Nice gets crazy on Halloween

F-Nice Records was out to play, act a fool, and drink beer on Halloween Night at Copperfield's (98 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA). An assortment of characters came out to party with us at our Halloween Extravaganza. Everyone really went all out on their costumes for the F-Nice costume contest. Even with several contest categories, it was a raging battle.

Throughout the night the amazing crowd at Copperfield's was entertained by some A-list Boston bands. Moonstone Lady, Mancub, Clayton Senne, Boys Regular and F-Nice's homeboys DAve Crespo and the Afta Pahty rocked some wicked tunes that had the crowd dancing all night.

We had an excellent time and look foward to our next event in a couple of weeks at McGann's Pub!

Pray For Polanski celebrate at O'Briens

Last Sunday, Pray For Polanski took the stage with The Furiousity & Tree Frog Avengers at O'Briens Pub in Allston, Ma. The gang came out to celebrate lead singer/ guitarist Aviv Rubenstein's birthday.

PFP came onstage and rocked out some of their favorite songs, such as Noah, It's A Lie, and The Way They Stare in their usual punkabilly form. The crowd really enjoyed the show and everyone had a good time.

F-Nice Helps Fight For Your Rights

F-Nice Records was out at Boston Common on Saturday September 19th for the annual Boston Freedom Rally. This was the third year F-Nice was out there supporting this very noble cause.

Through the sales of some new glow in the dark t-shirts we designed for the event, F-Nice was able to raise $350 for the rally. T-shirts were also given to those who received a $100 ticket for smoking marijuana that day.

On Saturday F-Nice also premiered the new Cars On Mars t-shirt. The new Cars On Mars shirt featured the winning design from our graphic design contest we held last month. The design was also featured on the new Cars On Mars after sex towel, which was very popular with everyone.
Cars On Mars got the festivities jumping with another one of their stellar performances. They also premiered a new song from their upcoming album.

All in all it was a good day. We raised money for a good cause, watched some excellent bands, and made a lot of new friends. Can't wait till next year.

Sneak Peek at New The Yer Moms Shirt

Alrighty folks, here it is. A new The Yer Moms shirt for their reunion / farwell show this Friday the 11th at McGann's Pub in downtown Boston.

These will be available at the show only and in limited quantity. Music starts at 9 and we expect to already be sold out by then. A special shirt for a special night because not all good things can last forever.

Whether you get a shirt or not, the whole night is going to be crazy entertainment with plenty of Narragansett beer to be drank.

The show involves many very special guests using a range of instruments which rivial a marching band. Supposedly The Yer Moms entire catalog will be performed, but that is just a rumor circling the Boston underground. Even if the word turns out false you can be sure all the fan favorites such as "30% Approval Rating" "$5 Blowjob" "I'm Not A Liberal" and "The Pescetarian Song" will be heard as well as some early songs you may not even know exist.

In addition to The Yer Moms, the night's music will feature the Sommerville Symphony Orchestra, Swell, and Iceberg Young and Tea Musket.

McGann's Pub is right by North Station in downtown Boston. The Yer Moms have practially rocked this place down before and this Friday September 11th will be a performance for the history books.

We are real proud to have the people from Narragansett beer helping us out on this show, so make sure ya tip a can to em while you're down there too. "You buy a case, they'll build a brewery"

Marcy Playground Boston Tickets Going Fast

As you may have guessed, tickets for the September 26th Marcy Playground show are selling faster than water-bottles after a terrorist attack.

The show features ours truly, Cars On Mars. Also playing is DAve Crespo and the After Party, The Energy, and the winner of a band battle earlier that day at The Middle East. We'll be pouring good old Narragansett Beer, and the guys from FNX are gonna come down to give some stuff out and enjoy the show.

Doors are at 7. It's all-ages. The Regent Theater is on a number of bus lines and has a ton of parking.

Pray For Polanski Ripping Up The East Coast

Pray For Polanski's tour of the east cost is going strong. The have dropped their rock on New York, Philidelphia, Baltimore, and now Washington D.C. and as always its was received with great love.

PFP brought on tour with them a whole bag of great fun including both CDs and Download Cards of their new album as well as a new shirt featuring a skeleton farting ghosts. The image for the new Pray for Polanski t-shirts can be seen here and is another instant classic in their "pray card" design line.

Still left on the tour is Asheville NC, Birmingham AL, another show in Baltimore MD, two in New York City.

If you havn't caught PFP on their tour yet check out Pray for Polanski on Facebook for tour dates, and don't forget to become a fan and sign up for the mailing list so you don't miss future events. If you have already seen them consider yourself blessed, and come be a Facebook fan anyway.
